Small Private lodges on the Laikipia plateau.

The Laikipia plateau is mostly private land. The ranch owners have managed their resources carefully, so this beautiful area is now a large reservoir of wildlife, which only a select few get the chance to see. We have a choice of places to stay, depending on availability.

This exceptional small private lodge has a commanding view of the Ewaso Ngiro river gorge.
The architecture is typically African “open plan”, making maximum use of local stone and natural wood with thatched roofs that blend beautifully with the surroundings. Every room is an individual open fronted cottage with a spectacular view of the river, and en-suite bathroom.

Even the bathrooms have been well designed, so you can enjoy a beautiful view of the river as you bath or shower. Beds and other furniture are tastefully made from natural timber. The main dining area is a large thatched rondavel, open to the river, strewn about with comfortable cushions and obects d’art.

Sabuk is owned by Simon
and Mel Evans, and run by Owen Evans who is residence to host us, and staffed by very welcoming local Samburu tribes-people, who dress colourfully in traditional scarlet robes.

We can choose to walk with camels and guide, through game country, with a chance of seeing game including the illusive Greater Kudu. Or go see a traditional Samburu village … or simply relax reading …
This is a superb small private lodge, and is one of my personal favourites,
which I particularly recommend.
The home of Nick and Heather Day, this house is set overlooking some of the best game and ranching country of the Laikipia Plateau. This is a typical old colonial ranch house with a great character, which the owners have taken a great deal of trouble to furnish tastefully in keeping with the surroundings.
Enjoy walks around this property, and an opportunity to join in the activities of the ranch.
Owned, and usually hosted, by Colin and Rocky Francombe, Ol Malo is set on a cliff well back from the Ewaso River, with a commanding view over the valley to Samburu beyond. The rooms are imaginatively constructed individual cottages furnished from local materials, with glass fronts. Ol Malo has a swimming pool with a stunning view out over the Laikipia at eye level from the water. Below the lodge is a water hole to which animals gravitate. Many different animals including leopard are regularly seen.
This is one of Kenya’s most exclusive country “home-stay” lodges with a well-deserved first class reputation, and prices to match.

Walking with camels is one of the options with some of the private lodges of the Laikipia.
If you would prefer to spend longer doing a camel safari this can easily be arranged. These are walking safaris, using the camels to carry our tents and bedding, which enable us to get far off the beaten track into wild and beautiful corners of untouched Africa.
For more details please write to us, we would be delighted to arrange a private camel safari for you.
